Hugh Russell and Ann McManus (last years winner) from the Irish News with Byrom Bramwell (Director and General Manager of Vodafone NI).

Vodafone are again proud to sponsor the 2004 Northern Ireland Press Photographers Competition.

Speaking at the launch of the competition was Byrom Bramwell who had this to say:

"Last year we at Vodafone were absolutely delighted at the success of the awards and the incredible amount of work that the Press Photographers' Association put into it. We were also highly impressed at the amazingly high standard of the entries and we are pleased to be involved with these very prestigious awards again this.

I am very pleased to announce that Vodafone is increasing the prize fund
this year and that there will also be an extra main category in the awards.
The News Category has been divided in two so that there will now be a News category and a Politics category.

It came to our attention at the awards dinner last year that the runners up
in the main Press Photographer of the Year and Provincial Press
Photographer of the Year awards did not receive prizes. So we have
rectified this by adding prizes of £250 and £125 respectively for these.
As you all know, four entries are shortlisted in each of the main
categories but up to now only the winner and runner up got a cash prize.
We thought that to be shortlisted in a main category is quite an
achievement and we wanted to mark that by awarding prizes to the 3rd and 4th placed entry in each of the main categories. So we have added 3rd place prizes of £100 each and 4th place prizes of £50 each.
This will bring the prize money to a total in excess of £10,000 and follows
the introduction last year of three new special merit awards for
photographers working in provincial journalism.

In our opinion, these increases are small recompense for the great service
which the press photographers in Northern Ireland have done the whole
community over the years. You are to be congratulated.

I look forward now to seeing all the entries at the Awards dinner in May
and I wish you all every success."
