This
is a story of rock in a hard place. It begins with the outbreak
of punk,
with bands such as The Undertones, Stiff Little Fingers and The
Outcasts, in
rough venues like The Harp and the Pound. We follow the story,
via acts like
Therapy, Ash and David Holmes. We revisit seminal nights at The
Limelight, The Nerve Centre, Sugar Sweet and Giro’s. Simultaneously,
we highlight the passionate, essentially underground photographers
who have helped to define those times. These include: Alastair
Graham, Ricky Adam, Iona Bateman, Niall Carson, Cliff Mason and
Graham Smith.
This
exhibition is put together in association with Radio Ulster’s
Across The
Line.
‘
Shot By Both Sides’ is the title of a song by the post-punk
band Magazine.
We feel that it captures the excitement the abrasion and the plurality
of the
music scene here. The exhibition is curated by Stuart Bailie,
a former NME music journalist who has also worked for the likes
of Uncut, Mojo, Q and Hot Press.
For the past five years, he has hosted a Friday radio show,
Across The Line on BBC Radio Ulster, 10.00-11.55pm.
