CATEGORIES EXPLAINED

News = A picture of an unscheduled event for which no advance planning was possible.

Politics = A picture of a person or people at or concerning a political event or happening or a picture with a political theme.

Sports = An action or non action picture pertaining-to sport.

Features = A picture which reveals the richness and diversity of everyday life.

People = Entries in this category should consist of pictures in which the emphasis is on the relationship between two or more people.

Individual Study = A picture with the emphasis on a single individual be it a study, portrait or whatever.

Picture Story = A set of 8-12 pictures which tells a story. Composites or collages are not eligible.

Business/PR = A picture of an event taken to promote a business / financial or promotion of an event.

SPECIAL AWARDS

Merit Awards = Merit awards may be given at the judges discretion from any category or categories.

Provincial Merit Awards = Merit Awards may be given at the judges discretion from any category or categories from the provincial photographer entrants.

CONDITIONS OF ENTRY

 

1         All entrants must be fully paid-up members of the Northern Ireland Press Photographers Association by 21st May 2009

2         All entries must have been taken during the period January 1st to December 31st 2008. It is not obligatory that entries should have been published.

3         All entries must be supplied on CD  as well  as print form.

4         All  images must be supplied  on  a board measuring 12in x 16in.  Prints may be any size. Images entered in the Picture Story Category must be on an A1 size board .

5         Composite, trick or digitally-manipulated photographs are not eligible. Photographs which anything has been digitally added to or taken away from, which alters the integrity or truth of the original photograph, are not eligible. Cloning-type tools may be used only to remove spots or scratch line. Photographs within which anything has been digitally moved from one location to another are not eligible. The use of levels, curves, brightness and contrast tools are permissible.

6         All entries must be in black and white or colour.

7         All entries must be accompanied by an official entry form and entry fee.

8         Any photograph may be entered in one category A-H only.

9         The competition committee and the judges reserve the right to re-categorize entries as deemed appropriate.

10      The maximum number of entries by any one entrant is 10. Picture story entry counts as one.

11      The maximum number of entries in the picture story category is two.

12      Entries in the Picture Story category may comprise 8-12 photographs of varying sizes. Any photograph which forms part of an entry in the Picture Story category must not be entered in any of the other categories.

13      The original source of the digital file must be available for inspection upon request.

14      Entries must be sent to: THE NORTHERN IRELAND PRESS PHOTOGRAPHER OF THE YEAR AWARDS c/o Event-ful consultancy ltd, 2 Lower Crescent, Belfast BT7 1NR

15      Entries must be received by 1700 hrs on Friday 5th June 2009 ( No exceptions)

16      The organisers will not be responsible for entries lost or damaged in the post.

17      All entries may be freely used by the organisers, NIPPA for the purposes of publicity and exhibition.

18      To qualify as Press Photographer of the Year or Provincial Press Photographer of the year entrants must supply a portfolio of 10 images.

19      Photographers must ensure copyright holder’s permission has been granted.
